The Blue-Fronted Amazon has a good ability to mimic and has a strong but mild personality compared to many other Amazon species. This popular amazon species has many excellent qualities to recommend it as a pet. The colour can vary from tending to have more yellow and pastel blue on the head and more red on the bend of the wing to the more common subspecies that has primarily a medium blue on the head and much less red on the top of the wing. The colour of the blue and yellow on the head is extremely variable among individuals, this makes each parrot unique. The Blue-fronts as with most amazons are comical and entertaining pets. They are stunning to look upon, their feathers look exotic and they have the true "parrot look". The ability to mimic clearly makes them endearing to humans as often they can be mistaken for a person talking if not seen! Although having clear vocal sounds, very often, the amazons will only learn a few phrases compared to the master of mimic the African Grey Parrot.

The baby Blue Fronted Amazons are very loving and they often reflect their beautiful parents at a very young age. Their individual temperament is very dependent on their upbringing and the teaching they have had as youngsters, they need a firm hand when being hand-reared. They are rated as the third best talkers of the amazons. These parrots soon develop strong personalities and can make very good pets if their aggressive nature is kept in check. It is important that they know who is boss from day one. They enjoy a spray with tepid water and usually they enjoy tickles around their necks and face.

As with most amazons, it is possible that they may become aggressive and unpredictable when they reach maturity. This period may begin at about 5 years of age, and may not be totally evident until sometimes after the age of 12 years. If you choose an amazon as a pet, it is very important that you maintain dominance and control, and, teach him acceptable behaviour. A well-trained Blue Front Amazon can be a very affectionate, loving, and entertaining pet, but as they mature, it usually must be accepted that they must be confined during breeding seasons so that they do not seriously hurt anyone.

When choosing a cage for your Amazons or any large parrot make sure it is big enough for the bird to fully extend it's wings without touching the sides. A cage with a playpen roof is highly recommended for Amazons as these birds love to sit up top and look around. Amazons enjoy chewing wood and should have wooden toys or prepared wood for chewing (only give toys that are designed for parrots). They also love green branches with leaves, but always wash them and check the suitability for your parrot. Remember you must do the thinking for your parrot it will not know if the wood is poisonous to it.

Amazon Parrots require a diet with a lot of fresh natural foods. Root vegetables such as carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes are important additions to the diet. In the wild parrots do not eat as much seed as we give them as pets and Amazons especially need the extra vitamins found in fresh vegetables. By all means give them seed but with plenty of fresh or defrosted vegetables, fruit is always good too but it has been found by research that vegetables have more to offer parrots in their diet.

Remember always to handle a parrot yourself before you buy. By experience we found that even if you decide on a species that you would like to buy it isn't always you that chooses the parrot. We have seen people fall in love with a parrot and we have seen parrots fall in love with a human, yes sometimes the parrot can choose it's owner! In any case be sure you are buying the parrot that is "right" for you and you'll have a devoted loving pet for many long years
